Memoir Mondays: How to Piss in Public

Memoirs have the power to move us, connect with us and allow us to share life changing experiences with people we’d otherwise never have the chance to know. Every Monday, we’re pleased to feature a memoir and open a window to someone else’s life.

As you can probably guess from the title, How to Piss in Public is not your typical memoir. While it’s about Gavin McInnes growing up punk in Ottawa, snorting cocaine and other drugs, hanging with Joe Strummer from The Clash, and having awkward moments with celebrities, it’s also about how he turned VICE magazine, a small Montreal publication, into a multimedia empire now based in New York, and how he gave birth to several successful viral videos.

This memoir details a variety of ridiculous and entertaining snippets from Gavin McInnes’ life, from streaking through New York City during the 2003 blackout to getting his mother so high she called the cops on goblins. Hailed by NBC as “The Godfather of Hipsterdom,” McInnes’ style is honest and raw. Ultimately, he just wants to make you laugh so hard you’d puke. Take a peek inside.

Get Drop Dead Healthy with A.J. Jacobs!

After years of neglecting his health, A.J. Jacob’s wife looks at his body and tells him, “I don’t want to be a widow at 45.” Jacobs realizes it’s time to make a change—a drastic one. It’s not just about eating healthy, exercising regularly, or even finding ways to de-stress. It’s ultimately becoming “as healthy as humanly possible.” How does he choose to tackle the feat? Any and every way he can think of.

Drop Dead Healthy is Jacobs’ hilarious account of his year-long journey toward maximal health. He tries the caveman workout, where along with fellow cavemen in Central Park, he takes off his shirt and shoes and, well, acts like an aggressive caveman, all in the name of breaking of a sweat. He also tries veganism, the treadmill desk, extreme chewing, meditation and so much more, alongside the advice of doctors, personal trainers and other professionals.

This isn’t the first time Jacobs, editor-at-large for Esquire magaizine, has taken on a year-long goal of self-betterment. In his previous book The Know-It-All, Jacobs strides to become “the smartest person in the world,” as he endeavors to read all 32 volumes of the Encyclopaedia Britannica, join Mensa, and become a contestant on Jeopardy!, among other brain-challenging objectives. In The Year of Living Biblically, Jacobs aims to “follow the Bible as literally as possible.” What this means to him is growing a beard, not wearing clothes with mixed fibres, joining Biblical communities, and more.

Daring and challenging, it’s no surprise that Jacobs went for it all again with Drop Dead Healthy. Hear more about the book from Jacobs himself with his list of “4 Allegedly Bad Things That Are Actually Good for You” below:

For more about Drop Dead Healthy, check out this funny Q&A with Jacobs and more on this website. Drop Dead Healthy releases April 10, 2012.

Also, Jacobs’ first book, The Know-It-All, is currently on sale as an ebook from Kobo and iBooks for $4.99!
